Describe the product, fill process, contact requirements, unit size, closure, barrier, shelf life, temperature, light, stacking, drop risk, transport, retail display, label area, tamper needs, disposal claims, destination, annual volume, and order pattern. Include drawings or samples and identify must-have versus preferred features.
Compare material and manufacturing capability
For glass, paperboard, corrugated, flexible film, labels, molded plastic, or metal, ask about available structures, tolerances, colours, finishes, printing, tooling, minimum run, changeover, quality controls, migration or compatibility evidence where relevant, and critical subcontractors. Evaluate the supplier against the exact pack, not a general category claim.
Control artwork, colour, and versions
Use a documented dieline or drawing, controlled artwork number, barcode verification, colour reference, print proof, and physical approval sample. Define who signs off text, regulatory content, dimensions, position, finish, and code readability. Freeze one production-ready version so the brand, buyer, designer, and converter do not approve different files.
Test the complete system
Test the pack with the real product, filling line, closure, label, secondary carton, pallet, route, storage, and user handling. A component can pass alone and fail as a system. Define inspection, retained samples, nonconformity handling, continuity plans, lead time, tooling ownership, and how a material or process change will be approved.
